North America Alternative Energy Expert Call: Zero energy homes; slide deck & transcript

We hosted a call with the Rocky Mountain Institute We hosted a call with Jacob Corvidae, Principal at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). On the call we discussed key findings from RMI"s recent report: "The Economics of Zero-Energy Homes" which demonstrates that the cost increase to build a zero-energy or zero-energy ready home is modest and highlights methods builders and policymakers can use to drive increased market penetration. Building new single-family homes to zero energy design standards represents a massive opportunity to address the carbon footprint of our building stock. Key takeaways from the presentation

The views expressed below are those of the speaker and do not necessarily reflect those of UBS.

 Definition of Zero Energy (ZE) Home: Highly energy efficient w/ own energy production (typically solar panels) that offset total annual consumption. Number of certified homes is growing but still very low – only 1,600 homes in 2017. RMI estimates that the incremental cost of a ZE home is 6-10% higher relative to the building code baseline cost. Highest energy consumption sectors include transportation, utilities, and buildings. There has historically been relatively less disruption in the buildings sector, but this is changing. RMI believes the current state of the energy transformation in buildings sector is similar to the state of transportation and utilities markets 5-10 years ago. Solar panels are most expensive component of ZE home. Utilizing a solar PPA, a homeowner can make home full ZE without increasing upfront cost. Lennar (LEN) currently offers a solar PPA solution as part of their homes packages, with energy charges 20% below retail rates. An increase in demand for ZE home would also be a positive for residential installers SunRun (RUN) and SunPower (SPWR). SPWR currently has ~50% market share of the new home solar market in CA. Market challenges: Builder learning curve effects, including subcontractor training, and proper communication of the full range of ZE home benefits to buyers which includes comfort, privacy, health, and safety, in addition to energy savings. Slide deck and transcript enclosed In this note we republish the slide deck from the call, courtesy of Jacob Corvidae and RMI.
