Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK’s first full 1G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology?
One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £1.4 billion for the 1G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK’s first hologram ( 全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn’t all holograms, however: 1G will offer faster internet access. with Ofcom ( 英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the “internet of things” -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones ( 无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 1G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 1G and 4G, and the first 1G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 1G phone well before 1G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. 1 、Why does Prof William Webb say “the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes”? A .He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B .1G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C .1G helps people communicate better with each other. D .He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks. 2 、The underlined word “addressing” in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to
. A .making a speech to B .trying to solve C .managing to decrease D .responding to 3 、The last paragraph indicates that
. A .it’ll take several years to make 1G accessible to the public in the UK B .1G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C .customers are eager to use 1G smart phones instead of 4G ones D .it’s probable that 1G network rollout is speeding up in Britain 4 、What do we know about the text?
A .Vodafone is successful in spreading the 1G service. B .Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G. C .The application of 1G will make life much easier. D .1G phones are available in rural areas of the UK. 22 .(8 8 分)
Finland is the happiest place on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report of 156 nations. The report, released Wednesday by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks the countries of the world based on six different categories of well-being: income, freedom, trust, life expectancy, generosity and social support. This year"s report also pays special attention to the happiness of each country’s immigrants. The U.S. dropped four spots from 2017 and landed in 18th place, and last year’s winner, Norway, came in second place — followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland. “The top five countries all have almost equally high values for the six factors found to support happiness, and four of these countries—Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland — have been in first place in the six World Happiness Report rankings since the first report" in 2012, ”co-editor John Helliwell told CNN. “In a division with such excellent teams, changes in the top spot are to be expected." Rounding out the top 10 happiest countries was Canada in sixth place, then New Zealand, Sweden and Australia. The order of the top 10 nations changed from the 2017 list but the countries did not, according to the report. They were also 10 of the 11 top spots in the immigrant happiness category (including Mexico — 24th overall, but 10th in immigration). “The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born,” Helliwell said in a statement. “Although immigrants come from countries with very different levels of happiness, their reported life evaluations resemble those of other residents in their new countries. Those who move to happier countries gain, while those who move to less happy countries lose.” Other major world powers placed in significantly low spots on the list. Germany came in 15th, the UK was 19th — followed by Japan in 54th place, Russia in 59th and China in 86th. The report, based on surveys completed by citizen volunteers, came just under a week before World Happiness Day on March 20, when the UN declared to recognize “the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives” 1 、The US ranked ______ in 2017. A .14 B .10
C .18 D .22 2 、What is the most significant finding of the report? A .That immigrants are different from residents in the country. B .That immigrants come from countries with different levels of happiness. C .That immigrants become happy when they leave the country. D .That immigrants and locals feel the similar level of happiness. 3 、What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A .Happiness is no less important than any other aspect in life. B .People’s happiness and well-being should be considered when it comes to policy-making. C .The happiness report came under a week before World Happiness Day. D .What the UN declared was beneficial to all human beings. 4 、What is the best title of the passage? A .World Happiness Day. B .Happiness — forever pursuit. C .What"s your happiness index( 指数)?
